While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, the game’s listing on GameFly has been updated to show UBisoft as the publisher and “TBD” as the release date. Kotaku additionally notes that the game might be integrated in the Driver franchise, as Ubisoft has the rights to the series, and since the concept of the game fits in so well with the series.
An official statement from Midway is yet to come.
Midway sends word that the Vin Diesel starring driving-action game Wheelman will be released on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on February 16, 2009. The oft-delayed game was originally set for release in 2007.
In development at Midway Newcastle and being co-produced by Diesel, with his production company Tigon Studios, the open-world effort will see players step into the shoes of the action star as he drives fast cars, evades cops, shoots bad guys and more.
Both Tigon and Midway expect an eventual feature film. Heck, a script is currently in development.
At its earnings conference call, Midway CEO David Zucker revealed delays for two of its upcoming titles. First up is BlackSite: Area 51, the forthcoming sequel for the alien-shooter. Previously set for release this September, the game will now be released on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 October 26 in Europe and November 5 in North America.
The Wheelman is the other game to receive a delay. Based on a movie of the same name featuring Vin Diesel, the game has now been pushed back to Q1 or Q2 2008. “We’ll be shifting our release of The Wheelman starring Vin Diesel for the first half of 2008 to give our development team more time to turn this ultimate car chase game into what we expect will be a broad impact top notch title,” Zucker said. The game was initially pegged for release later this year.
Making his way into another movie and videogame is Vin Diesel, who’ll star in the upcoming “The Wheelman” feature film from MTV Films and Paramount Pictures, with the game being developed by Midway, in association with Diesel’s Tigon Studios and MTV Games.
The motion picture will star the ‘XXX’ hero as an expert wheelman who comes out of retirement to protect a woman from his past. The script for the project will be worked on by Rich Wilkes, who worked with Diesel on the aforementioned movie. Diesel’s Tigon Films and MTV Films plan to produce the film, with Paramount Pictures intending to release it.
“With The Wheelman we have created the first integrated franchise being launched for both the gaming and film industries,” said Vin Diesel. “In collaborating with Midway, MTV and Paramount, TIGON Studios has brought together an incredible team to execute this project.”
The Wheelman will be the second of three titles under the recently announced strategic relationship between Midway and MTV. Both companies will collaborate in jointly selling in-game advertising and soundtrack development.
No details or platforms were mentioned on the game. Also, no release date was provided, though it is expected to be available at around the same time as the movie… which has no release date yet.
