Ubi Not Interested in SCi

Serving as an insult to SCi, Reuters reports that Paris-based Ubisoft no longer has any interest in buying the Eidos parent company. Apparently, the purchase would be too expensive, according to an Ubi representative.

“Ubisoft has no intention of making an offer for SCI-Eidos,” said an unnamed Ubi spokesperson. “We are looking at other opportunities for external and internal growth which can create more potential value for shareholders.”

Though Ubi may no longer be interested, SCi is still courting two possible suitors – Time Warner and an unnamed Chinese corporation.

Warner Bros. Buys into SCi; Publisher Goes Game Crazy

Bringing good news to SCi is Warner Bros., who has acquired ten percent of the company in a deal worth 44.5 million GBP. SCi is taking this deal very ambitiously, as the company has announced that it will create games based on Looney Tunes characters for portables; produce up to ten games based on Hanna-Barbera characters; games based on the Batman character as well as the hit TV show OC. Additionally, SCi has acquired the licensed for animated TV shows Loonatics Unleashed and Legion of Super Heroes.

That’s not all: it will also produce up to 20 games in total across current and next-gen platforms, with Warner Bros. providing primary distribution and media buying services to Eidos in the US. Expect to see these titles released from 2008 onwards.

Eidos Dude Loves PS3, Claims Lara Croft Popular than Mario

Eidos’ product acquisition director Ian Livingstone is a man with words… lots of it. In an interview (part 2) with Gamesindustry, he stated his support for all three next-gen consoles, offering positive words for each of them. According to him (and rightly so), Microsoft “has obviously got a 12 month head start on the competition” with Xbox 360, while Nintendo is “concentrating on gameplay above all else” with a “cheaper priced product” referring to the Wii.

His most positive words, however, were left for the PS3: “It’s extraordinary quality, that’s the starting point,” he said about the console’s Blu-ray technology, adding that “if people are seeking the ultimate machine, the PS3 is clearly the best spec machine as far as next-gen goes. As with all things in life, you have to pay for quality.” He concluded that “Sony just has to educate people that yes, it’s a lot of money, but it’ll be worth it.”

He didn’t stop there. Livingstone also spoke about the company’s big franchise, and gaming icon, Lara Croft, commenting that further Tomb Raider games are in development and that the publisher is currently speaking to Paramount about a third Tomb Raider film. And that’s not all: he also made the dubious claim that Lara Croft is more popular than Mario, Nintendo’s long-time mascot, due to her ability to break beyond the games niche “thanks to two blockbuster films” as well as her appeal to women as well as men.

Eidos to Publish Age of Conan; Game Delayed

Funcom has announced that they have signed a co-publishing agreement with SCi/Eidos for Age of Conan, the upcoming MMOG based on Robert E. Howard’s universe. Eidos will be distributing the game in North America, Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, with Funcom retaining the rights to digital distribution; Funcom will also be responsible for operating servers and providing customer service for the game.

The announcement also saw a delay to the game: it is now set for release sometime between March and May 2007. There are also plans on bringing the game to consoles.

Original Tomb Raider Getting Remake

One of Kotaku’s legions of “super secret agent reader” has sent in word that Eidos is planning on re-doing Tomb Raider 1 and 2 for release by the time the franchise hits its 10 year anniversary. To get your “juices” flowing:

Anyway, I was over at Eidos/SCi headquarters for an interview when I stumbled upon some material concerning a new Lara Croft game. My juices got flowing when I realized I was looking at the real thing and I started asking some questions. Turns out Eidos/SCi are planning on celebrating Lara’s 10th birthday by releasing a remake of her original adventure. We are talking improved graphics, new moves, the lot. If there is time, the “new” game will feature a remake of both Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II: The Dagger of Xian, but right now the developers are focusing on Lara Croft’s first adventure.

According to Wikipedia, Tomb Raider hits the 10 year mark this November. Maybe an announcement from Eidos is imminent?
