There have been rumors that next-gen consoles would block used games. You don’t have to worry about the next PlayStation though, as industry analyst Michael Pachter noted that SCEA boss Jack Tretton is opposed to the idea.
Pachter, speaking on GameTrailer’s Bonus Round, said that he had directly asked Tretton if the rumors were true. Tretton gave a rational reply, stating that he was “opposed to blocking used games” and that they were “great for consumers”.
However, Tretton admitted that it was his personal view and that the designers in Japan might think differently.

Sony has revealed that you get Warhawk free with the Starhawk online network pass. This classic PSOne game was released in 1995, and now works with the latest PS3 exclusive.
All you have to do is redeem the pass found on the back of the Starhawk manual. The game will then pop up on your download list.
Starhawk is out today in North America exclusively on the PS3. Sony and developer Lightbox Interactive took the chance to announce a Major League Gaming tournament with $20,000 in prizes. You will find more details on MLG’s website.
They also announced that all map packs for the game will be free upon release. In fact, they noted that the first one is already in the works. The PlayStation Blog notes that there will also be paid DLC.
Finally, here’s a launch trailer. The game is due out in Europe on Friday.
Sony struck gold with its Kevin Butler advertising campaign that has proven to be popular with everyone. Butler’s first appearance, if you didn’t know, was in a commercial for Sony’s MLB The Show that featured Red Sox player Dustin Pedroia as well.
So, what’s next in Butler’s plans for world domination? IndustryGamers has the answer from Scott McCarthy, brand manager for PlayStation software.
“We have all the baseball gamers on PS3… as far as market share we can’t target more baseball gamers, so we have to target sports gamers in general. And so with that in mind and using the Joe Mauer/Kevin Butler ‘Well Played’ [vibe] that we got last year, we wanted to expand on that just as we’ve expanded on PS3 in general with the ‘It Only Does Everything’ campaign. What that led us to in the spot was Joe and Kevin sitting down on the couch together really smack talking back and forth with each other, continuing that ‘bromance’ that started last year,” McCarthy revealed.
McCarthy added that the trash talking theme will be online next week with a series of videos featuring Kevin Butler. “Because The Show is on such a higher level this year, you have to increase your trash talk to get the most out of the game,” he said. “…[At] least that’s what Kevin thinks.”
