Over on Game Matters, Scott Miller’s blog, is word that Prey has sold over a million copies and that plans for a sequel have gone ahead: “There will be a sequel, and we think we have a interesting follow-up story to tell and some all-new innovations to bring new excitement to the table.”
Meanwhile, Total Video Games says that they have got confirmation that Just Cause 2 is also in the pipeline. The original was developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. As expected, there are no details, but the game is said to be in development for PS3, PC and Xbox 360.
The Prey Linux dedicated server binaries are now available from 3D Realms. To set up a dedicated server one will require the full game, as some files from the CD (or DVD) are required.

Mark your calendars: June 22 is the day to look forward to the Prey demo. According to this 3D Realms announcement, the demo will be available for both PC and Xbox 360, showcasing five levels containing both single and multiplayer modes from the full game.

2K Games will be hosting quite a few events at its booth at this year’s E3. Below is the full schedule:

The Grand prize is a VoodooPC HEXX gaming PC customized for Prey, with premium prizes from AMD, Creative and Logitech. In addition, attendees who play Prey at the 2K booth receive a free Prey customized Func Original sUrface1030 mousing surface (while supplies last), courtesy of ATI and 2K.
The Limited Collector’s Edition will include an original copy of Prey and include a special metal packaging, two die-cast pewter figurines (pictured) including the lead character Tommy and the alien Hunter, a free download to a Prey soundtrack, and a copy of “The Art of Prey” book featuring collected conceptual and development images from artists behind the game. The Limited Edition of the game will be available on DVD-ROM only.
Gamers who pre-order either the standard or Limited edition of the game will receive a die-cast pewter figurine of Mutate. The Mutate is a melding of the DNA of human and alien victims; it possesses a massive claw in the game that can impale its enemies.
Prey is due for release this July.
Another Prey weekly update has been posted, and this time they talk about a lot of things – music and dialog in particular. The update is also host to the re-introduction of the “Ask Prey” email address. So, if you have a question about the upcoming action game, send it over and have it answered in a future update.
Over on 3D Realms is the tenth development diary for Prey, which talks about a variety of topics, including word that Hollywood animator Eric Weiss has joined the team to finish the game.
The ninth weekly development update for Prey has been posted, discussing the Xbox 360 version of the game. Here’s a bit from the lengthy post, which also offers a screenshot from the Microsoft console version on the right.
Prey really stretches the Doom3 engine, sometimes in ways it wasn’t designed for. It aims to create a convincingly organic-looking alien world full of curves and natural shapes from an engine designed around box-shaped rooms, and features many additional shaders and special effects that take the visuals far beyond the original Doom3 engine. This extra load meant the coding team had to work hard on optimising the code, removing bottlenecks and spreading the load across the three cores at the heart of the 360 to hit our target of a constant 30fps framerate. We have also had one coder, Mick, working for the best part of 6 months using the 360 performance analysis tools to identify the slower areas of code and rewrite, or in many cases replace routines with low-level machine code to squeeze the best from the machine.
Also included in the update is a group picture of the development team.
