Whether they’re attending cosplay events, gaming conventions such as Gen Con, or even just a Halloween party, some gamers love to dress up as their favorite characters. There’s a nearly endless number of possibilities when it comes to video game costumes, but there are a few ideas that are relatively easy to assemble and guaranteed to get recognized.
When it comes to boy’s Halloween costumes from video games, hardly anything is more recognizable than Nintendo’s Mario and Luigi. Mario wears a red long sleeved shirt under blue overalls. He also sports white gloves and black shoes. A red hat with a large letter ‘M’ on the front and a big black mustache complete Mario’s simple look. Luigi also wears blue overalls, but his long sleeved shirt is green and his green hat has a prominent letter ‘L’ on the front. Luigi sports a big black mustache and white gloves just like Mario. Some Mario Bros. costumes are even equipped with inflatable bellies to help the wearer achieve the portly look that is sported by both brothers.
Lara Croft from Tomb Raider is one of the most popular costumes for girls that love video games. Her costume is easy to make at home – all you need is a light brown, short sleeved T-shirt and khaki shorts. Several holsters and a canteen are useful to make the costume look more authentic, and combat boots are the necessary footwear to pull off Lara’s adventurous look.
The Halo series is one of the most popular video games ever, and it has achieved success with both critics and gamers. Master Chief from Halo 3 is a character that many gamers enjoy dressing up as for cosplay as well as Halloween. The official costume includes a black and green printed jumpsuit with a molded chest piece. It also includes a half helmet and gauntlets.
The Legend of Zelda
Link from The Legend of Zelda series is another wildly popular video game character. His costume is fairly simple and the most important piece is a long, green tunic that is tied with a brown rope or belt. A long-sleeved brown or white shirt should be worn underneath the tunic. Link usually wears brown boots and brown pants under his tunic, and he also wears a green hat. Accessories such as a gauntlet, a scabbard and a sword are available to accent a Link costume. A blonde wig and pointed ear covers may be added for a very authentic look.
Prince of Persia
Since the movie release in 2010, Prince of Persia costumes have been very popular. The prince was not given a name in the video game series, but in the movie he was known as Dastan. Dastan wears a black and gold chest cover that looks like armor, with a tattered white shirt underneath. He wears a wide, black belt with a red sash and black pants that are tucked into his tall brown boots. Gauntlets adorn Dastan’s arms and he carries a sword with a gold handle.
Taking it to the Next Level
Costume authenticity is all in the details. Anyone can buy a costume online, but having hair and makeup just like the character adds authenticity, as does adding small details and accessories to the costume. Acting like the character you are dressed as can also make the whole experience more fun. Watching the appropriate movies or playing the appropriate games is the best way to get a feel for how that character talks and moves. Using the character’s facial expressions, body movements and famous quotes is the difference between dressing like a character and actually becoming that character.
